About MATE

According to the Wikipedia, MATE is a desktop environment forked from the now-unmaintained code base of GNOME 2. The name derives from yerba mate, a species of holly native to subtropical South America used to prepare a beverage called mate.

MATE was originally forked from Gnome 2 by Perberos, an Arch Linux user from Argentina. MATE got its breakthrough when Linux Mint included MATE as an alternative DE on DVD version  of Linux Mint 12 (Lisa).

In the early, MATE was quite unstable. The most common errors were the panel lost and didn't support some gtk themes included Ubuntu Ambiance Theme. But now, since MATE 1.2, this DE is very stable, fast, and absolutely ready to be used as an alternative to another current maintained DEs like Gnome Shell, Unity or KDE 4.

Personally, if we talk about alternative DE, MATE is not just an alternative. It is probably the most popular DE in its era before GNOME 3 took over the rule. And so, with its resurrection from the coffin, MATE (we hope) will save so many Linux users love.
